Teeing it up in Mountain Cool Ruidoso, New Mexico
Written by Chuck Duncan • Photography by David McAlister

Ruidoso, New Mexico is a wonderful golf destination. Set in the foothills of the Southern Rocky Mountains, the beauty, terrain and climate combine to create a memorable Golf outing. The area courses offer up a variety of challenges. The “Inn of the Mountain Gods” Resort and Casino course is a championship layout located just outside of the Village. Long rolling fairways, elevated tee boxes, huge undulating greens, challenging bunkers and playable hazards all make for a spectacular day. Designed to be played by all handicap levels you will find the choice of tee markers to be critical. The whites are friendly, the blues are challenging and the tee boxes located a full wedge behind you are for the truly confident. The scenery is breathtaking and the 19th hole offers The Apache Summit Barbecue Company restaurant with cold beer and lip smackin’ sauce.
Another truly remarkable track is “The Links at Sierra Blanca”. Located in the Village of Ruidoso it plays like a true links is supposed to. Long, hilly fairways are both punishing and forgiving at the same time. You may be able to play an errant ball, but you can automatically add a stroke to your card. However, if you hit them true you will be rewarded at the end of the round as this course favors those who practice. One hole after another offers a different perspective on the game, each presenting a unique challenge and a different view of the spectacular scenery that is Ruidoso. Water and sand come into play on many holes, but the lush fairways and smooth well manicured greens make ball striking a special event.

For those who prefer a shorter course “Cree Meadows Country Club” is the ticket. Located in the Village just seconds from Midtown Ruidoso, this course is the local men’s league's favorite. Although the course is not as long as the others, it can be very challenging. Though the out-of-bound’s markers loom perilously close on many fairways, a good shot always pays off in spades. The greens are large and tricky and usually “break” away from the Mountain...giving you a good excuse to take in the view! The 19th hole serves great fare and has a wonderful pub feel. Of course, after the round, Ruidoso offers a nightlife second to none. Vegas style gambling, live music, world-class concerts, live theater, pubs, western style saloons, wonderful restaurants and Mountain Cool evenings!

We invite you to come to the Mountain and tee it up!
