Fun on Mescalero Lake
Written by Chuck Duncan • Photography by Mickey Cochran

If you have ever driven past the Inn Of The Mountain Gods Resort and Casino you, no doubt, marveled at the emerald beauty of Mescalero Lake. Fed directly from snow melt and spring run off this lake is reminiscent of the glacier fed lakes of Waterton and Banff.

The Mescalero lake water is clear and cool, making for a great spot to relax and enjoy a day out. And, of course, in true Mescalero tradition the Inn has made boat rentals and fishing available for their guest’s enjoyment. You can rent a four seater peddle boat and take the whole family for a cruise around the lake or rent a two seater for that romantic voyage across the water to the tree lined shore on the far side.

Kayaks and canoes are also available and all rent by the hour. For the angler this is a real treat as the lake, though closed to fishing for some time, is now reopened … can you say “lunker”?

Ask at the concierge desk for directions to the Boating and Fishing rental office. It is in the old hotel (now known as the towers) just down from the Inn’s underground parking facility so no need to drive anywhere.
